Hashtags are keywords that can be used to track conversations on a particular topic, event, conference. Searching for the tag allows participants or others to follow the conversation.
A number of tools can be leveraged in order to follow a synchronous discussion.
After the event, comments can be collated with the same tools, or by using Twitter Search or one of the other Twitter search resources:
Twitter search API's: use these to integrate search with other apps, such as json and atom feeds. Also has examples of various search operators
Tweetscan: a flexible twitter search that also searches identi.ca and other sites. Also has access to their API's for RSS, json, atom feeds.

Polling with Twitter:
There are a number of polling clients that operate with Twitter. These can facilitate polling of your PLN or class.
