Twitter in the ClassroomThis is a featured page

Rodd asked me to make a paradigm or white paper for twitter classroom activities but am of two opinions the wiki format here should not inhibit people posting ideas on the other hand as McLuhan said the medium is the message.
Guidelines so far: Activities should be decentered and group dynamics should place more emphasis on student tweets rather than on teacher led tweets.
Activities should take advantage of features like:
  1. Backchannel
  2. Hashtags
  3. Synchronous capabilities
  4. Add on "aftermarket" features like 12second.tv or twit pages like twitter scoop
  5. Collaborative process
What I am thinking is that activities don't have to take in all of the above to be considered twitter efficient, but should include one of the core values or characteristics of the rubric.

Maybe in the long run Twitter should be considered training for dealing with AI's.Because, according to NASA, we will be dealing with them in another 18 years.

Within thirty years, we will have the technological means to create superhuman intelligence. Shortly after, the human era will be ended. Is such progress avoidable? If not to be avoided, can events be guided so that we may survive? These questions are investigated. Some possible answers (and some further dangers) are presented.
_What is The Singularity?_ The acceleration of technological progress has been the central feature of this century. I argue in this paper that we are on the edge of change comparable to the rise of human life on Earth. The precise cause of this change is the imminent creation by technology of entities with greater than human intelligence. There are several means by which science may achieve this breakthrough (and this is another reason for having confidence that the event will occur):
  1. o The development of computers that are "awake" and superhumanly intelligent. (To date, most controversy in the area of AI relates to whether we can create human equivalence in a machine. But if the answer is "yes, we can", then there is little doubt that beings more intelligent can be constructed shortly thereafter.
  2. o Large computer networks (and their associated users) may "wake up" as a superhumanly intelligent entity.
  3. o Computer/human interfaces may become so intimate that users may reasonably be considered superhumanly intelligent.
  4. o Biological science may find ways to improve upon the natural human intellect.

The on-going, collaborative story Many Voices is an example of a use for Twitter.

at the bottom, links to project ideas for elementary, secondary, post-secondary would make sense

Possibly include arguments/counter-arguments for use by students. Might also include examples of schools that have used this successfully with contact links to administrators.

bradfetterer twittering in Spanish classroom 0 Aug 3 2012, 8:46 PM EDT by bradfetterer

I just signed up for twitter so I'm not sure how it all works. I do know from hosting a class facebook group last year that students love to comment on just about anything even in Spanish. I what I don't understand is the concept of follower and followee. Do I need to make my students follow me so that they can read the questions and observations I pose? Should I also follow each of them? Should they also follow each other? I am already confused. Also, can thousands of other people read our tweets? My students' Spanish is comprehensible but never totally correct. Will this embarrass them if other comment on their Spanish?
I really do want to try this soon. Your thoughts are appreciated.

I have been trying to incorporate this authentic communication - twitter- ina timid way. the seniors with 4 years of Spanish need to post a message in Spanish every day for 2 days in the assigned #. I generally answer with a question that they in turn answer. I also post an address of a blog of interest for the topic we are studying and ask a question about it.
I would like to find more ideas for High School students who do not have a laptop all the time with them.
Thank you very much for any contribution

I've started a collaborative spreadsheet for teachers who user Twitter in their schools. This might be helpful to those who are interested in getting started. http://spreadsheets.google.com/ccc?key=0ArEWinLIvaYEdDlyTnVTV3JyX3d3QzhrRkJKd0tnc0E&hl=en
