Do we want to list Teachers on Twitter?

Do you think pages listing twitter users is worth pursuing? We could set up a Google Doc to auto fill each of the pages on this site. It could be a simple hyperlink without need for registration on the wiki. Thoughts? 2  out of 2 found this valuable. Do you?

I think that we need to make it easy for teachers and other educators to use Twitter to build a PLN. Right now, the toughest part is teaching them how to find people to follow. Creating a list would make it easier to start this process, so for that reason alone I am all for this idea. 2  out of 2 found this valuable. Do you?

I think it would be great to have a resource available of teachers on twitter. It would make our PLN even more powerful is you coould look in one place and find teachers similar to you that you can follow. BTW-this whole thing is a great idea! Do you find this valuable?

It would be nice if we could group teachers by keywords instead of having them in a list. Lists are great but if we let people pick their keywords then you could have teachers in more areas. I myself, think I could fit in three or four categories. Do you find this valuable?

I love the idea of a searchable database... Does anyone know how to do this?

For ease of use, I think we should look for:

1] teachers should be able to self identify themselves via a few short fields (name, country, teaching specialty, keywords, twitter ID...)
2] the database should auto-update
3] a search field would have to be developed...

This is beyond my experience with Google Spreadsheets and Google Custom Search... Any ideas?

Here's a shared Google spreadsheet of higher ed people on Twitter: https://spreadsheets.google.com/ccc?key=pDRBDCXPE33Ngxud2xZfvcQ&hl=en

That relies on the honour system - anybody can edit - which is risky, perhaps. A form would be better and would more likely produce uniform results. That bit I understand. Converting the output spreadsheet into a searchable database is not something I have done. Strikes me that one would have to set some limits at the input stage - have participants select from a limited range of tags for most of the fields, and leave a couple of more open ended fields.

My college has a couple of great tech/web people. I'll encourage them to look this way and see if they can help out.

Let us know what you find out from your techies Ed. Maybe sending a tweet out for support would help with a solution? Do you find this valuable?

Here is the suggested solution:

http://delicious.com/Twitterteachers

Which can generate a public RSS feed for those who want it. Two choices about managing the account: 1) a few of us have access and do the bookmarking and tagging, or 2) we make the account password publicly available for people to enter their own details. Latter is nice, although comes with risks. Risks can be reduced by some of us taking regular backups of the bookmarks on that account.

That's a novel solution Ed!

What if we create a unique tag 'twitterforteachers' or 't4t' that we could suggest users use as a tag? That way anyone could bookmark his/her own twitter page, and one could simply search all of delicious using the unique tag and any other keywords (eg., 't4t, science, biology, teacher'). So long as no one else uses the tag, we should be able to safely filter all types of educators.

Could you write an explanation of how we might leverage Delicious for this purpose? In addition, I'll be happy to blog about it. We can use the Who Should I Follow page to explain things, and to list a number of recommended tags that people can use to identify themselves.

I suspect that this strategy will catch on in the event it's not already been done... Great idea!

OK - sounds like the way to go. Let's start with a single tag - TwitterTeacher ? - and I can use that Delicious account to aggregate.

It might be good, before we publicize this, to think of other tags we would like people to use. If you look at the way I tagged my own page at http://delicious.com/Twitterteachers there are a few possibilities.

OK, I've created a video tutorial that I'll post on my blog and on the page that use the twitterteacher tag. We can recommend tags on the renamed page " A Delicious list of Educators". Do you find this valuable?

So what happened to the old list? I do like the idea of creatign a google form for each category. You could make it pretty or related to the subject then embed it on the original list, then make the answers viewable to everyone and embed that beneath the form. I liked having everything linked and I organized the music education list last semester, then I linked all of the unlinked pages. It worked really well. I think if we could designate at least one person per list to do that, it could work. Then everyone else could do it as they see fit. We just need to make sure everything is completely visable to everyone. Do you find this valuable?

Jennifer, I'm not sure what happened to twitter4teachers.com but I suspect the domain was not re-registered. I'll see about picking it up. Do you find this valuable?
